Here we planned to systematically investigate the impact of protein and lipid composition, curvature and lateral membrane tension on domain formation in multicomponent membranes derived from hippocampal neurons and from synaptosomes. We mapped the position of certain proteins found in the membrane with a non-invasive and label-free rapid rupture event imaging, force distance-based atomic force microscopy (AFM). The technologies employed, unfortunately, were not precise enough for a thorough characterization.
