An understanding of synaptic transmission requires precise knowledge on the series of events coupling the depolarization-induced activation of the synapse to synaptic vesicle exocytosis. Several aspects of presynaptic function are difficult to study in the preparations used prevalently in this SFB, such as synaptosomes and hippocampal cultures. We will address this problem by studying rod photoreceptors, using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches.
