Synapses, the communication hubs of neurons, hold the key to understanding brain function. Much of our knowledge about them is derived from microscopy, such as super-resolution microscopy or electron microscopy. However, analyzing such data is a slow and manual process. We are developing artificial intelligence to automate the image analysis, to gain insight into synaptic function based on much larger datasets. Our main applications are (cryo-)electron tomography and super-resolution microscopy. We have developed tools that are used by several partners in the SFB to automatically analyze synaptic morphology. Now, we are researching methods that can also extract molecular information from imaging data.
